Buddy's contemplating a 1990 YJ, +124k miles, $3300

2.4L 4 cylinder, manual tranny.

Other than a center console lock box, it looks pretty stock.

He's not planning to wheel it but just needs a cool daily driver.

Any mechanical/engine/electrical gotcha's? Did a search and checked the tech FAQ's and didn't find anything.

big tires on a 4 cyl engine.... there's yer "gotcha"... will turn into a JEEP (Just Empty Every Pocket) trying to get more out of it without replacing it with a YJ that comes with the 4.0L 6-cyl.... Price is a little high for a 4.0 from that era, I'd have to pass...

It'll run a lot better with stock size tires on it! But around here 3300 is an Ok price with doors and a top.

That's not a bad price. Different areas, different prices. If it's just a DD then he would be way ahead of the game to go with more of a stock size tire. Four poppers and big tires don't mix.

My cousin had one with a 4 cyl and a 5 spd it sucked he decided to put 31x10.50 on it with a slight lift that was the scariest thing I had ever driven on the road. It wanted to roll over on top of itself and had no power at all it wouldn't move out of it's way with bigger tires. Now my truck with bigger tires isn't a powerhouse but it actually moves when you want it to. My suggestion is to tell him to find one with a 4.0L they are pretty powerful and just better. Also it lost oile pressure and we put a high pressure oil pump in it, changed crank bearings, and decided not to get into it anymore and sokd it. THANK GOD

Nice looking rig but I have to agree. My buddy Jasons 4cyl YJ is slow even going downhill.
I'd Carfax that one for sure, 124K on a 1990 seems fishy. My 91 has over 300,000 on it.

whoa, 300k?! my '87 has 257k. that's a lot of driving you're doing.

only way to go is with a six... 4.2's have plenty of torque.

Like BJ said, in Texas $3300 with doors and top is not a bad price. The pic makes it look pretty well taken care of. And for a DD it would not be a bad buy, but the tires are too big to do any good off road on that setup.

214,000 is what mine has and it's a 91, and a YJ 6-Cyl can get up to around 350K at best without major work done. The low miles may or may not have anything to do with anything. BUT could be a bad thing, just the same. In Central-Virginia, you can't expect to sell a 4-Cyl for over a grand, even if the tires/wheels are worth that much alone. 6-Cyl's on the other hand, can run $3,000 for just a good frame and a clean VIN.

Theres two kinds of rims! Them that are beautifly polished wonderfully shiney and bright riding around the mall... And then there are the working rims! You will see them on the trails, in the backwoods and jacked up behind the house! I prefer the latter.
