Recently I've been getting a random problem in my 4Runner. It would studder and sputter for a few minutes like one of the cylinders was not firing. Never threw a code. Was very random, only happening on cold starts and happened like three times in the last 2 months.

Happened again last week. Studdering got worse, and eventually threw a code. Went to autozone, they said "misfire cylinder 4"

I cant get it to reproduce the problem, so troubleshooting is difficult.

I'm curious, how does the ECU identify a misfire in a certain cylinder? From what I understand, the truck has 3 coil packs, and each one fires 2 adjacent cylinders. How does the ECU pinpoint exactly which cylinder is misfiring?

I need to figure out if spark is getting to the plug or not, hopefully its something simple like a coil pack, wire, or spark plug. I replaced the plugs not too long ago with NGK's.

www.autoshop101.com Article 41, Ignition#3 basically spells out how that works.

Essentially, the coil packs are set up, based on a few things; the crankshaft sensor position (cylinder position matching) and the time it takes for the coil to build up its induction charge again. I would imagine the ECU is able to sense the CS position with the firing sequence as they are paired. My apologies here; am still larnin' the new gen Yotas m'self. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />

The FSM's over in the Taco section should be able to help you wring out the coil packs. Fixin' to go thru this myself with the 2.7.

Ahh OK, I understand now. Thanks!

I'll have to pull it in the garage today and have a look.

Adam, I do believe I found my #2 misfire malfunction:

[img][image]http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w185/Yota99714/Yota%20Mech%20Pics/Misfire2withAutoliteplug.jpg[/img][/image]

#3 wasn't much better. Whoever had the truck before me put Autolites in 'er. They were all blue, and the electrodes were pretty much like little nibs.

I've got a cheap tricks article coming out of this too. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

BTW, gave myself an early Christmas present-- NAPA had a 40% tool discount last weekend; scored an Actron CP9175 reader. Cleared the codes; purrs away; so far so good. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Nice!

I instaled NGK plugs just a few months ago, so I don't think its my spark plugs.

Plus I pulled the # plug wire/boot and it looked fine. But I'm still planning on installilng a new set of wires to see if that fixes it.

Nice article! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> I'll have to save one of my plug wires for this!

Yeah, it worked pretty slick. Gotta thank John for sticking my photo in there after the trouble I was having earlier. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Figured out my problem. One of the plug wires was arcing to ground right at the coil pack. I wiggled the wire a little and it quit. It was throwing a nice 2 inch blue arc! Looked and sounded just like an old school stun gun!

My NGK plug wires are supposed to be here tomorrow according to the Fedex tracker. That will fix the problem for sure.

I found the NGK's from a few places. I could special order them from the local Advanced Auto Parts for $36, but I found them for $32 shipped from www.rockauto.com

The cheapest parts store brand were $52. I was kind of surprised to find NGK's cheaper than the parts store brand <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Only downside, the wires are blue <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" /> I plan on putting some black cable wrap on them
