OK, I called M&S and they said that the 4.90 diffs from a montero sport come from the 3.0L engine version. would these diffs swap right into my gen II montero with a 3.5L engine? I need a little more info on this for sure before I buy them. I know someone out there knows for sure. I am trying to get a locking rear diff with 4.90 gears that bolts right into my 3.5L montero and a matching front diff with 4.90 gears that bolts right in as well. does anyone know the year and what size engine will allow this swap??

I am pretty sure that diffs from a 2001+ montero sport 3.0L have 4.90 gears stock, but do they swap right into a 3.5L gen II montero??? can anyone verify this?

after doing some talking with some part yards, the diff from a sport with the 3.0L will swap over to a montero with a 3.0 but not a 3.5, is this correct? man, that a bummer if that is the case??? I am itching for an answer....

From Hollander exchange ( junk yard interchange computer )
444-56313
MONTERO SPORT
MONTERO 3.0L 6 cyl
This is for the Differential assembly.
Both non locking
For just the Diff, they are the only ones that the computer says will swap with no changes. No notes on the application.

Possibly a driveshaft change required?

I bet they say a 99 MS axle wont fit into a 83 montero either, but it will.

I dont think the centersections will swap, but the whole housings will. ?? dont know for sure though.

I want to make sure I am understanding your post correctly:

are you saying that a diff from a montero sport 3.0L will swap directly into a montero with a 3.0L? what I am trying to find out is if a 4.90 diff from a 3.0L sport will bolt directly into the axle housing of a 3.5L montero. I know that the 3.5L monteros have 12 bolt carrier patterns. I need to find out if the sport 4.90 diff has 10 bolts or 12, that should answer my question, does anyone have a sport with a 3.0L and 4.90 diffs that can count how many bolts go around the carrier???

I have a 93SR with 4.90s, I will count tomorrow for you. I dont know if it is the same as the sport though.

I am saying exactly that. I only find it happening in the non locking setup. ANY 97 Montero Sport non locking will fit in 96-97 Montero 3.0L. I cannot find the ratio.
Now, this is not to say others will fit. This is what the interchange computer lists.

yeah, i am having the feeling that the 4.90 diffs only swap into 3.0L monteros and montero sports. I do not think they are going swap into a 3.5L montero. looks like I may have to use 4.6 diffs from a 94-96 3.5L montero like I just put in my 97 LS. Along with the 3.15 t case gears that should be plenty enough to spin 35's. I was hoping for 4.90's direct swap, but 4.6 will be plenty enough. But I think there was a guy out there that knew for sure, I am not going to count the 4.90's out until this post is up for a while and hopefully someone will know for sure. I am pretty sure there were two bolt patterns 10 bolt and 12 bolt. the 12 bolt pattern was used on the 3.5 engines and the 10 bolts were on the 3.0 it seems.
