Happy New Year from 4x4Wire.com!

As one years ends, another year begins.  While 2008 saw many changes started, 2009 will see  those changes move forward. The economy and energy are major factors that will drive change in the coming year.  Some will drive change.  Some will embrace change as an opportunity.  Some will be hurt by change.

Whether in your professional life or personal life, change is happening.  The only constant is change.  We are in the midst of rapid and massive change that will have a lasting impact on recreation.  Now is the time to become involved.  Membership in many organizations is falling off.  Now is the time to examine your priorities and make your voice be heard.

As we move forward, the below list of five items represents my view of issues that will be major factors in the legal, legislative, and administrative processes affecting recreation opportunities.

Motor Mounts and Choices PDF Print E-mail

YJ Motor MountsThere comes a time in the life of engines when items need to be replaced.  Such a time had come for my Wrangler.  It started with a little vibration under acceleration.  With over 130,000 miles, one motor mount was loose and a small leak had developed with the exhaust manifold.

The motor mount was an easy solution: after market or stock.  Actually, that provoked some discussion.  Turns out, the easy choice is not that easy.  While quality aftermarket products are available, they do come with a price.  In this case, it was about two for one.  In other words, I could get two stock motor mounts for less than the cost of one aftermarket motor mount.

Cheap Trick - Toyota Sparkplug ToolAs some of us might already know, the spark plug wires of days past are quite unlike the new ones we see in the EFI/distributor-less ignition systems of today.

The old wires had a short 2-3 inch boot that covered the connector seated on the top of the spark plug. The new ones have a rigid probe 3-6 inches long, with a similar connector at one end, and a quick-release plug at the other end, which usually plugs into a coil igniter pack.

When I did the first tune-up to my 1999 Toyota 4Runner, I was met with the odd puzzle of realizing the spark plugs resided in the narrow niche of a shaft well below ready access, unlike on the head of my familiar 22R’s.

SPOT - for the offroad emergency PDF Print E-mail

SPOTTechnology is making significant improvements to treks off the paved road.  One area that has seen rapid improvement is in communications.  In the good old days, CB radio was (and still is) standard fare for communications during the off road trail ride.  Over time, the CB has yielded its top sport to a succession of new comers: 2-meter amateur radio, cell phone, and GPS.

Each has benefits and drawbacks.  None provide true emergency location finding.  That is changing with SPOT.  SPOT is a combination of GPS and Satellite phone technology providing a beacon transponder that can send a 911 distress signal or a simple check-in message.

SPOT takes your GPS location and sends it to others back at home over a commercial satellite network in real time so they know exactly where your are and how you’re doing. SPOT works virtually around the world regardless of cell phone coverage.  SPOT provides four functions: Ask for help, Check-in, Track Progress, or Alert 911.

Personal Lights

Frequent wheeling trips extend past the daylight hours and present a few challenges.  Technology and LEDs are now easing the task of lighting the way.  For personal use, two products standout - LED headlamp by Petzl and an LED micro-light from Gerber.

The Petzl headlamp provides 40 lumens of light with four selectable power ranges.  Powered by three AAA batteries, the headlamp is rated for 60 to 120 hours of operation, depending on the power range.

The four ranges are selected by push button switch that cycles through a high, medium and low range followed by a strobe of one second on and one second off.  A momentary  contact switch will select a boost mode that provides a light beam reaching out to 50 meters or slightly over 150 feet.  The light angle can be tilted to provide light coverage close to distant.
