Border to Border Thanks and Notes

Friday, June 19, 2009 Border to Border Thanks and Notes

While I have a good internet connection, during this awesome Reno Rocks event, I wanted to take a minute to thank a few folks who are helping make the border to border trip possible. That is where I was before I hit Reno for this event.

Of course, Jeep and Mopar are on top of the list as Chris borrowed the Jeep Overland right from the Mopar boys. ARB, Viking Off road, WARN, BFGoodrich Tires, American Expedition Vehicles, JeepCamping.com, AdventureTrak (SPOT), 4x4Wire.com (John Stewart), EQUIPT Expedition Outfitters, and Expedition One chimed in to make this trip a real adventure.

Border To Border Update - Sunday

Border to Border Update - follow Chris and Del on their journey finding the dirt roads from Mexico to Canada

Life on this border to border trip is simple – drive, camp, eat, have a cold one, sleep, drive some more.  We do 12 hour driving days, switching off on the wheel as we need to.  Radar the Wonder Dog helps keep things lively as he gets excited every time we turn a new corner or see something new.  Energy drinks don’t hurt, either.

So far, we’re 6 days and over 600 miles of dirt into this trek from Mexico to Canada, with a long ways to go, but a totally amazing assortment of adventures under our belt.  We started in the Algodones sand dunes, and are now in Bishop, CA, having traveled through parts of the Mojave, Joshua Tree National Park, Death Valley and yesterday, Saline Valley.

Border To Border Update

Warm Spring Canyon, Death Valley

Update from the Border to Border All Dirt Trip - June 13, 2009

The picture is of camp here in Warm Springs Canyon of Death Valley, testing the cool Coleman Stove and table from JeepCamping.com. Very nice weather.  Had a short visit with Uncle Patron last night so slept well.

No service in camp so I don't know when you will get this but it's going well and we hope to be in Saline Valley or Eureaka Dunes or Lippenciott Mine tonight.  Have not fully decided yet.

Doing Goler Wash and Butte Valley today with a short stop at Balarat.

Jeep is doing well and my butt is holding up ok.  Lots of driving and riding.  Every day is a 11 or 12 hour drive day.

Chris is keeping a full blog and log on www.fourwheeler.com (Chris Collard).

I'm keeping up my Facebook with pics and short updates.

Life on the road is good.  Can't wait to see my lovely woman tho.  This is a long adventure for Uncle Del.

the traveling guy, Del

BLM Encourages Responsible Use at OHV Area

The BLM is encouraging recreationists to be mindful of rules and regulations and to act responsibly when using the Glendive Short Pine Off-Highway Vehicle Area located six miles south of Glendive, Montana.

The OHV area, situated just off Dawson County Road 335, consists of 3 1/2 sections or 2,240 acres of federal lands and is seeing an increase in use from both U.S. and international off-road enthusiasts."We would like to keep this area open to OHV use and riders who respect adjacent private property, clean up after themselves and operate safely will allow us to do that," said Elaine Raper, field manager for the Miles City Field Office.

According to Raper, the BLM has had several requests to close the area due to off-road vehicles trespassing onto adjacent private property. Lately, the area has seen an uptick in littering, dumping and sign vandalism; things BLM staff have limited time to address."The BLM would rather send staff out to improve access and recreation opportunities," said Raper. "Having to clean up trash and replace destroyed signs takes away personnel, time and resources that could be better used elsewhere.  "Short Pine is classified by the BLM as an "open" area; which means it is open for off-road and trail use by motorcycles, three wheelers, four wheelers and four-wheel drive trucks and sport-utility vehicles. Safety is of particular concern; both for the vehicle operator and for others in the area.

According to BLM Law Enforcement Ranger Lori Harbaugh, the tendency by some riders to ride up and down the county road is an issue."Vehicles need to be plated and street legal when operating on the county road," said Harbaugh. "Both motorists and recreational vehicle operators need to use caution when driving the county road where it bisects the OHV area."When using the Glendive Short Pine Recreation Area, recreationists are reminded that the following rules apply:
